No-till and Reduced Soil Disturbance

Preserving Soil Structure and Health

Farmers and researchers studying soil health have found that reducing soil disturbance is an important part of building and maintaining healthier soils. This can mean farming without tillage, known as no-till, or limiting tillage through reduced-till or conservation tillage practices. Minimizing soil disturbance helps reduce erosion while also preserving the soil’s natural structure and stability. Heavy tillage can break down soil aggregates, reduce organic matter, and damage important macropores within the soil.

Macropores

Soil macropores are small channels created by earthworms or formed as plant roots decompose. These channels play an important role in allowing rainfall to move into the soil, improving air exchange, and creating pathways for future root growth.
