Nutrient Management

Farmers and agricultural advisors are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of having a strong nutrient management plan for individual fields, pastures, and the farm as a whole. One approach that has gained widespread use is the 4R strategy, which focuses on applying the right nutrient source at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place. Farmers who apply manure are also using improved timing and application methods to help reduce runoff from fields. Some are composting manure to make better use of its nutrient value. Incorporating livestock into seasonal or year-round grazing systems can also support an overall nutrient management plan. Cover crops can help hold nutrients, especially nitrogen, in the soil and reduce losses through leaching, while buffer strips can help limit nutrient runoff during rainfall events.
